Unable to communicate with families in need of electricity, water, food and health services,New York’s Puerto Rican diasporas growing increasingly impatient with President Trump and the federal government’s response to the hurricane ravaged island.

“They even believe in him anymore.”“Sent help, get the military over there.”

In East Harlem New York one of the largest Puerto Rican communities out side, the US territory residents are struggling to remain optimistic about the well-being of their loved ones.Larry Montes is worried about his grandmother.

“I want to know how she is doing health-wise.I want to know how much my family’s actually receiving supplies at all.I want to know how much my family’s actually receiving supplies at all.I’m seeing that everything stagnating in the warehouse.”

Well, unable to provide a precise estimate, New York Mayor Bill Deblasio expects, the city will take in thousands of fleeing Puerto Ricans in coming weeks, as more flights become available out of San Juan, the capital.Clotilde Solis who spent days trying to communicate with her husband’s family in the small town of Pytheas,hopes enough resources can be made available for a smooth transition.

“It would make me happy the government can accommodate them here because they need it. These people need a roof where they could be reunited as a family.”

But until then a grassroots relief effort among local Puerto Ricans city workers and the larger New York community has taken shape to ensure additional aid is delivered to those who need it most.

“It takes all of us not just the government has to be people also churches, community, organizations, that we all pull together and help.Today it will be Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, tomorrow it might be us.”
