The Amtrak train with 78 people on board was on its first ever run along a new high-speed route that was to shorten the travel time for commuters.

When the accident took place the train derailed on a bridge between the City of Tacoma and Washington State Capital Olympia and several carriages fell onto the I-5 freeway under the bridge.Some passengers say the train came to an abrupt stop throwing them from their seats.

The US National Transportation Safety Board said a group of 20 experts in the areas of mechanical operations tracks signals and human performance have been dispatched to the western state to determine what caused the train to derail. A Board official said those affected by the accident are eligible for federal assistance.

US President Donald Trump said in an early morning tweet that the train accident only shows the need for a quick approval of his upcoming infrastructure plan.In a speech later Monday he also expressed condolences to those affected by the crash.

The train had 14 cars and 13 of them jumped the tracks and sprawled across the tracks and the highway officials say some of the cars were not safe enough to be searched which means the death toll could be higher.
