VOA常速英语:Kids, Candymakers Look Forward to Easter Holiday
The Easter holiday is upon us and that means bunnies, chicks, eggs and candy—the most popular part of every child’s Easter basket.

“Oh, the kids they love it.They, they look forward to it.”A highlight of Easter morning.“They should try to give like a book or something to but it’s always candy. You can’t have no candy.”That’s good news for the National Confectioners Association which says the holiday generates big business for the chocolate, candy, gum and mints industry.

“Well, Easter is the second largest candy moment of the year.Halloween is really our Super Bowl of this industry, but Easter is close to second.This year we’re projecting sales to be about 2.6 billion dollars.”That’s just for Easter.Overall, Chris Kendall’s Berger says that the industry has an economic impact of about 35 billion dollars a year,with Christmas and Valentine’s Day being other high sales times of the year.

David Burton, owner of a Washington DC-based candy store,says his best sellers at Easter include chocolate bunnies and anything sort of egg-shaped.And colors and shapes matter, he adds.“It is interesting because we tried chocolate Santa’s and they were not nearly as popular as chocolate bunnies were,so that’s just an interesting thing we learned.”“Also we had red and green malted milk balls at Christmas time and they sold okay but the malted milk balls were our first candy to sell out of here for Easter.”

Chocolate lover Liz Twarog says she doesn’t buy anything for herself when shopping for her children’s candy.“No, I just give them extra and steal it.”Likely a familiar approach for many parents over the holidays.
