The life of a surgeon is always quite hectic. Thanks to a wheelchair that converts into an exoskeleton. Orthopedic surgeon Marco Dolfin has back doing what he loves best—helping our people through medicine. The 36 year’s old has been working at the San Giovanni Bosco hospital in Turin for six years.
I have it tailor-made for myself. The specialized wheelchair allows him to rise to a vertical position so he can operate like other surgeons. Even now I see in the eyes of a patient that I have met for the first time, a bit of astonishment, sometimes mistrust, but from the moment we start talking of his or her issues and we begin developing the empathetic relationship between doctor and patient. The wheelchair goes on the back burner.
In 2011, just two months after getting married and two weeks after starting his career as a surgeon, a serious motorcycle accident left Dolfin paralyzed from the waist down. The accident changed his life but he was determined to do the thing he loves most-practice medicine.Leaving work only because it is thought that someone with a disability cannot do certain things.
I wanted to try first hand and see if I could have actually still been able to do certain things. When I have seen that there were no real practical obstacles. I kept going my own way.
Dolfin has overcome great obstacles and now leads a full life. He’s now the father of twin sons and recently competed in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro where he was placed fourth in the breaststroke competition.
I have yet to understand whether it was a question of luck or misfortune.Let’s say that nevertheless I like the fact that I have found a new normality. My condition might be heavy to stand sometimes. But at the end of the day it has given me many joys. Hence, I believe that having had a second chance was definitely good luck.
Marco dreams of competing in 2020 and says year’s learn important lessons from the challenges year’s face.Giving yourself complete, putting all the passion you have does often pay you back in terms of results.Maybe it won’t happen right away. Maybe it will come about in other ways. But in the end is what in some way allows you to react what you have soaked in.
