Young Girls Get a Head Start for a Life in Politics
“Vote for me for president, cause I’m kind, smart and respectable of others and my self.”Eight-year-old Maira Philips was one of the young candidates to be, at camp Congress for girls held this month in Washington.Mothers and daughters teamed up to launch mock bids for political office.
With their moms as campaign managers, the girls came up with a platform, finance plan and a slogan.“Trumps was make the America great again.”“That’s a bad one.”“Why it’s a bad one?”“Because like one of the debate they said America is already great.”The program part of the girls in politics initiative began eight years ago
and is now held in 58 cities across the United States and 14 cities around the world. It’s designed to introduce girls to politics, policy and the work of government. Topic it can be a bit intimidating. “That’s kind of why I wanted to bring her, because I’ve always been kind of, you know, afraid it’s kind of daunting politics, you know, public speaking and everything. So I wanna come to it. It’s kind of explain to her to the, and to show her that, you know, it’s not scary, that’s something that women can do too.”And these young women are up to the challenge.
“It’s crazy women used to not be able to vote and now we may have a woman president. It’s really cool, so I think that’s really important.Because I don’t want it to keep being like gender, like people can’t do this because you’re a woman. I think that’s damn.”“I wanted to come here today, because I really wanted to become president when I grow up.”“She’s a good person and she wants to make a change in this world. And I think she will.”In an election year in which women are running for office in record numbers.Mom say workshops like this open young girls to a possible future in politics, empowering them to believe that they too can make a positive change in the wold.
