VOA常速英语:Michigan Sand Dunes Attract Tourists, Swallow Properties

The Silverlake Dunes, natural remnants of the Ice Age are located along Lake Michigan’s shores.Theses dunes are being shaped by the sand carried over the water and spread by strong winds that constantly sweep through the area.Lake Michigan resembles an island sea with its size and mildly salty water with many different natural beauties,thousands of tourists come to the Lake each year.

But over the past few years interest in sand dunes has grown.They change every year so one year they were, one dune was larger than others, just the wind change but pretty much does that.The dunes are moving.It doesn’t seem like that but there are a lot of wind, there are a lot wind action that moves the dunes.But these massive moving sand hills and strong winds can be both dangerous and costly to locals.When sand moves and forms new dunes, it varies everything in its path.

This homeowner who didn’t want to give his name was among those who lost his house to the dunes.Very lost the house, next house two years ago was in my family as well.Some homeowners and the local government are at odds about whether property loss to the dunes should be taxed.

So we’re still paying taxes from that property that was lost a couple years ago from the dune toppling over on top of it.While the dunes are a battle between nature and man,it’s also a natural wonder that draws tourists from around the country and the world.
