The One Where Ross Hugs Rachel

Ross hasn't gotten the annulment yet... but he has gotten a little crazy. It seems the idea of a 3rd failed marriage has pushed him over the deep end. Phoebe (and her panel of women) decide Ross is still in love with Rachel. Ross is in such denial about this that to prove them wrong he goes to his lawyer (Russell) to take care of the annulment... but finds that it's more complicated than expected, and Rachel will have to be told the truth. Chandler and Monica break the news of their live-in plans, first with Joey (who is happy for them, but sad to be losing Chandler) and then to Rachel (who doesn't seem to have much of a reaction at all... until she takes it seriously). Rachel is so sad that Ross still can't tell her the truth. Phoebe foretells the future marriages of the entire group.

故事梗概

Rachel和Ross在拉新维加斯度过了疯狂一夜后， 就不得不面

婚姻注销， 因此……

Rachel: Hey, so did everything go okay with the annulment?

Ross: Oh, yeah, no problems. It抯 all taken care of.

Rachel: Ross, thank you. Hey, do you guys wanna go see a movie?

Ross: Oh yeah, why not?

Rachel: Okay, umm, I’m gonna get my sweater. (Walks away.)

Ross: Okay. (Sits down next to Phoebe.) You uh, you wanna hear something weird?

Phoebe: Always.

Ross: I didn’t get the annulment.

Phoebe: What?!

Ross: We’re still married! Don’t tell Rachel. See you later. (He gets up leaving Phoebe in shock.)

我们知道在中国，两个人结了婚要是后悔就只能离婚(divorce)。而在美国除了离婚之外还有一种分开方式，就是取消婚姻(annul a marriage)。但divorce和annulment有什么区别呢?通常annul是指宣告婚姻无效(declaration that a marriage is void)，而divorce又叫dissolution of marriage是指婚姻的结束(the ending of a marriage)。当然要想宣告无效是有条件的。就婚姻而言，通常符合以下条件中任何一条就可以申请宣告婚姻无效。夫妻任何一方在结婚时已经与他人结婚(Either spouse was alreadyraarried to someone else at the time of the marriage．)；夫妻任何一方结婚时年龄太小，或年龄太小并且没有获得法院或父母的同意(Either spouse was too young to be married，or too young without bquired court or parental consent．)；夫妻任何一方在结婚时受到了药剂或酒精的作用(Either spouse was nder the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the marriage．)；夫妻任何一方结婚时神志不清(Either spouse was mentally incompetent t the time of the marriage．)；受到对方欺骗或对方施加暴力才同意结婚(If the consent to the arriage was based on fraud or force．)；夫妻任何一方结婚时，由于身体原因不适合结婚的。那么双方这样的婚姻关系就被法律所禁止(Either spouse was physically incapable to be arried(typically，inability to have sexual intercourse which persists)at the ime of the marriage；The marriage is prohibited by law due to the relationship etween the parties．)。
因此在酒精作用下而决定去结婚的Ross和Rachel完全符合取消婚姻的条件。所以他们申请的是annulment而不是divorce。
