The One With The Male Nanny

Monica's excitement about her new place of work doesn't really phase Chandler, until she mentions that one of her co-workers (Jeffery) is the funniest guy she's ever met. Chandler tries to prove he's funnier. Phoebe and Mike take the next step in their relationship, by exchanging apartment keys. Then Phoebe's old flame, David (The Scientist Guy), comes to town from Minsk for a few days, putting Phoebe's emotions in conflict. Rachel and Ross hire a male nanny (Sandy) to care for Emma, but he's too sensitive for Ross's comfort. Joey learns life lessons from the nanny's puppet shows.

故事梗概

Phoebe和Mike本来都以为自己不会遇上合适的人了，结果他们却相互吸引。为了他们之间能有进一步的发展，Mike提出交换被比的公寓钥匙,Phoebe 出乐意地答应了。就在这个时候，Phoebe的旧爱科学家David从明斯克(Minsk)回到纽约，此时的Phoebe又难以抵挡Mike的吸引。在这样同时与新欢旧爱的感情纠葛中，Phoebe真是左右为难……

Monica: Wow, isn't it ironic that David would show up on the same day that you and Mike exchange keys?

Phoebe: (sarcastically) Uhuh... Yeah...!, you know. And given my life long search for irony, you can imagine how happy I am.

这里出现的show up指“出现、露面”的意思。show up可以指一般的“显露”或“显示”，如显露某人的性格或某物的特征等；它也可用于贬义，表示“暴露，揭露”的意思；它还可指某人在会议等场所上的公开“露面”。例如：

The mark shows up only in the strong sunlight．

跟show up很相似的一个短语show off．虽然它们部有“显露”的含义,可实际上，它们是有区别的。
shaw off主要用于贬义，指人的一种自我表现，即“卖弄”或“炫耀”自己的才华、财产等；它也可用作中性词语，表示“陈列。展览”或“使显眼。使夺目”的意思。例如：
He never shows off．
(他从不卖弄自己的才能。)
She loves to show off her new dresses．

这一集当中还出现了一个重要短语“search for”，要注意它和search，in search for的区别。
首先search for中的search是不及物动词，与其后的介词for结合，构成及物性短语动词，表示花费极大的气力去“搜寻，寻找”某个特定的目标的意思。search for有时可以分开使用。即scarch．．．for后接具体事物名词，表示“任(某地)搜寻(某东西)”的意思。例如：
For a whole day they searched for the lost child．

We searched the WOOds fOr the missing child．
(我们在森林里寻找那个走失的孩子。)
The puppet soldiers searched the Village for our underground workers．
(伪军在全村搜寻我们的地下工作人员。)
而非介词搭配的search是及物动词，表示“搜查”的意思，其后通常接地点名词或人物名词。例如：
He even searched my home without any reason．
(他甚至毫无理由地搜查了我的家。)
The policeman searched the thief，but found nothing．
(警察搜查了那个贼，但是一无所获。)

再说in search for为短语介词(其中search为名词)，表示目的，常译作“(为了)寻找或寻求”，for亦可用of代替。例如：
They went out to Australia in search for／of gold．
(他们到澳大利亚去寻找黄金。)
