本集简介：

The One With The Lottery

Everyone decides to pool some money and buy lottery tickets, except Ross, the lottery skeptic. Rachel and Ross, expecting Emma to start talking soon, eliminate offensive words from their conversation and start calling each other "Mommy" and "Daddy." Chandler waits for news about whether his internship will turn into a permanent assistant's position. The open positions get filled and he's depressed about not getting chosen, until he learns that he's being offered a better position - Junior Copywriter. Phoebe, frightened by a pigeon, accidentally drops the lottery tickets off the balcony, and half are lost. But they still win... three dollars.

故事梗概

六个朋友合买的彩票被Phoebe拿着，可是在阳台上装着彩票的盘子由于Phoebe的疏忽，被突然飞来的鸽子撞翻。彩票撒到了楼下，大家赶紧下楼去捡，最终逐是只捡回来一半。无奈，所有人都把精力集中在自己手头的彩票上，希望其中一张能中也好。结果到最后，只有Phoebe中了个尾奖3美元，还要跟大家分享。第二天Joey奋地告诉大家，没有人中大奖，因为他刚刚打过电话去问。可Gunthen说虽然没有人中头奖，但却有人在外面大街上捡的彩票中了1万美金，大家立刻把愤恕的目光投向了Phoebe……

Joey: (sitting in a chair) Hey guys, so I just called the Powerball hotline, can you believe it? Nobody won.

Phoebe: I beg to differ (shows him her cup of coffee and her plate of cookies).

Gunther: Maybe nobody won the jackpot, but there was this guy in here earlier, and he found the ticket on the street, right outside, and won $10,000 (goes to the counter).

(They all glare evilly at Phoebe)

Phoebe: (hides her mouth behind the cup and speaks in the "pigeon voice" from before) Coo, again. Don't blame the pretty lady. It was not her fault. It was me, the pigeon, coo! (pause) Seriously, stop staring at her.

很多人都跟Joey他们一样，做梦都盼着能撞大运，发大财，希望哪天能中500万的大奖。不过，如果问一下他们，“中大奖、走好运”用英语该如何表达，可能大部分人都会摇头。其实，英语中正好有一个短语可以相对应：hit the jackpot。

jackpot的意思是“累积赌注、首奖、头彩”。这个单词最初和彩票业并没有什么关系，而是起源于一种叫作暗扑克的严肃的赌博游戏。游戏规则是这样的：每人分五张牌，面向下扣，第一次叫牌后可以掉换一定数量的牌；只有在有人持有两张J(Jack)时才可以开始叫牌，而且在叫牌之前，每个人必须押上一定的赌注，形成这一局的赌资(pot)。经过几轮的叫牌之后，赌注金额会越积越多，最后的赢家将获得所有的赌资。(jackpot，the accumulated stakes in a kind of poker that requires onc to hold a pair orjacks or better in order to open the betting．)jackpot就是由此而来。

jackpot在扑克游戏中的本意出现于1881年左右，随后就出现了今天我们所知的喻意，即“大奖、好运”。

hit the jackpot，从字面上就能看出它的意思来，就是“中大奖，中头彩”，如：

I hit the jackpot．I struck it rich!
(我中了头彩，我发财了!)

这其中struck是strike的过去式和完成式，有“发现(地下矿物)”的意思，例如：to strike oil是找到石油，to strike gold是找到金矿。to strike it rich是说找到丰富的矿藏，引申为“突然获得大量财富”，例如：
He struck it rich whcn the stocks soared．
(股票价格飙升，他赚了很多钱。)
hit the引申其意，还有“大获成功”的意思。例如：
He hit the jackpot with his first movie.
(他第一部电影就十分成功，大赚了一笔。)

人在中奖或者成功以后都会特别的高兴，往往这时候的感觉都是飘飘然的，用来形容这时候的感觉我们常说“I am walking on alr.”(我在空中行走。)或者“I am sitting on top of the world．”(我凌驾于世界之巅。)

在这里再介绍一个：
I am on cloud nine，because I hit the jackpot．
(我好高兴，因为我中了头奖。)

为什么co be on cloud nine等于“非常高兴、兴奋”呢?原来据气象学家说，云层最高大约离地面八英里，一个人高兴得飘飘然，仿佛飘到浮云最上层，距地面九英里，所以就有了“on cloud nine”这一说法。
