贴切传神搞翻译:千姿百态

    在英汉翻译中，同义词（近义词）的恰当运用能使语言大为增色。应当看到，这是创造性思维加工的结果，它无疑有赖于译者对原作真正意境、气氛和精神实质的透彻理解。      例如，在Washington Irving 的小说“Rip Van Winkle”的开篇，作者创设了一个极浓烈的大自然的氛围：

      “Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed, every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains.”

      显然，这里的四个change，就有四个概念，需要对这四个情景作出联想。

      （1）every change of season: 生活经验告诉我们，冬去春来；春夏秋冬四季因时光的流逝而（季节）转换。

      （2）every change of weather: 至于天气，晴雨冷暖、风雪雨霜，则时时刻刻都在变化。

      （3）（every change of）every hour of the day: 凭每个人的阅历都知道，时过境迁，一天之中分分秒秒都在转变。

      （4）some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains：在不同的季节，不同的天气，不同的时间，显然，山峦会出现千姿百态的变换。

   可见，创造性的思维，要求在新的语境中具有语言转换能力，而不是将已知的知识作简单的复制。注意看看下面译例中划线部分的用词:

      1. Every year, when the air turns sharp, I think about my mother.

      2. There were lessons to be learned from nature in the autumn.

      3. A memory: when I was seven, on the night of my mother's 40th birthday,she took me outside to stand beneath a moon so bright lit up every corner of the garden.

参考答案:

  1. 每年，当气温骤降，北风凛冽时，我总回忆起我的妈妈。

      2. 人们可以通过秋天的大自然获得许许多多的教益和启迪。

      3. 往事，我依然历历在目，记忆犹新: 七岁时，在母亲四十岁生日的那天晚上，她带着我站在屋外，皎洁的月光点亮了院子的每个角落。
