名人教英文：和衣服有关的惯用语

新年伊始，不知大家有没有添置新衣裳？许多英文惯用语（idioms）和衣服有关，可以用于日常生活的对话。

go cap in hand（to somebody）源自在街头拿着帽子行乞的动作，意即请求别人给予金钱或其他帮助，通常还带有“低声下气”的意思。政府成立关爱基金，向城中富豪募捐，有人或会讽刺说：the government is going cap in hand to the billionaires to solicit donations to the community care fund.

另一个和帽子有关的惯用语是throw one's hat into the ring。此语源自拳击，ring即擂台阵，throw one's hat into the ring的意思就是宣布参加竞赛。早前范徐丽泰接受访问，指选特首须具备“两信四有”—“两信”即得到中央信任及市民信任，“四有”即有心、有量度、有诚信和有班底。于是舆论再次猜测：范太会否throw her hat into the ring，宣布竞选特首？

我们说someone is overdressed，即是说这人穿得太隆重了，例如：someone is overdressed if he wears a tuxedo to a casual dinner。穿得正式而隆重，叫dress up；穿着轻便服装，叫dress down。例如：you should dress down for this casual occasion.
