特首选战如火如荼,明年特首选举过后,又到立法会选举,故这次介绍一下有关选举的词汇。
参选,英文是run in an election或run for office(公职)。例如:run for chief executive即“竞选特首”;run for re-election即“竞逐连任”;run against someone即“与(某人)竞逐同一职位”。另一说法是stand in an election。
候选人是candidates,也可称为contenders。香港立法会地区直选采用名单制(list system),名单叫作list或者ticket。譬如说:we are running on a pro-democracy, pro-middle-class ticket,意即“我们组成一张支持民主和中产的名单参选”。竞选搭档就是running mates。
候选人有热门、冷门之分。领先者叫leading candidate。至于“黑马”,其实出自英语dark horse,近义词是long-shot candidate。long-shot字面意义是射程太远,中的机会微;用于选举,意谓胜算低。有些候选人明知胜算甚低仍然决定参选,例如说:"mr chan runs in the election although he knows the odds are against him." odds一词和dark horse同样源于赛马赌博,本来解作“赔率”,及后引伸指“成功机会”。the odds are against someone指某人的成功机会甚微;而 against all odds 则有“知难而进”之意。
