The British government has published a document outlining its contingency plans in the event of a no-deal Brexit. The Operation Yellowhammer papers predict major hold-up such as channel ports and shortages of fresh food and medicine. They also warn a risk of public disorder. The British government has meanwhile refused the demand to release internal communications between the prime minister’s top advisors about the decision to suspend parliament. Earlier, opposition MPs demanded parliament be recalled immediately after Scotland’s highest civil court ruled the suspension was unlawful. The government says it will appeal to the Supreme Court.

Ten days after Hurricane Dorian began causing devastation across the Bahamas, officials say 2,500 people have been registered as missing. They say the names are now being checked against government records and evacuees. And they stay in shelters.

The President of South Sudan Salva Kiir and the former rebel leader Riek Machar have promised to set up a power-sharing government by mid-November. They shook hands and smiled after completing their first face-to-face talks in months.

Astronomers have for the first time discovered water in the atmosphere of a habitable planet orbiting a distant star. Researchers in London say it’s the most likely planet outside our solar system to be able to support life. The planet is more than 100 light years away, too far to send a probe.
