...galvanizing moment in Washington on Saturday for those opposed to President Obama's health care plan. Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets to rally against Democrats in Congress and a whole lot more. ABC’s Yunji De Nies was on the National Mall for the rally. She joins us now from the White House this morning.
Good morning, Yunji.
Good morning, Kate. The numbers are hotly debated. Washington officials estimate that as many as 75,000 people marched on Pennsylvania Avenue. Regardless of how many, their message was loud and clear.
USA, USA,…They came with signs, costumes and lots of energy. A government they see is too big, wasteful and out of control.
We don't want your new health care, we don’t want any more taxes, we don’t want any more stimulus, we don’t want any more lies.
They carry a great mistrust of almost anyone in office.
Every politic...Democratic politician is working for the Mafia.
He is a communist.
Do you really believe the President is a communist?
I believe he is not only a communist, but all you have to do is to look at the people he’s brought in as czars. You know, look at the things he’s doing.
Some even called to bury Obama-care with Kennedy, but the marchers insist they are not extremists.
We've been mis-characterized as a mob, as terrorists, as racists, as gangsters when really we are just Americans who are fed up.
The marchers’ message was aimed squarely at the president.
Start listening to the people, sir! We’ve had just about enough!
Mr.Obama held a health care rally of his own thousands of miles away in Minneapolis. (Fire up!) He told a much more supportive crowd to join him in the fight for health care reform.
It begins with you. Sharing your stories, fighting for something better. That's how change happens!
But with that fight for change intensifying, common ground is getting harder to find .
And the White House had no official comment on the march. The President will hold the another health care rally on Thursday. But many analysts believe when it comes to health care reform, right now it really all comes down to Congress. Bill?
