It’s as simple as flipping a switch, and then watching the seabin slowly and methodically clean plastic off the water surface.

“The seabin is quite a simple device.It’s got a pump running through it pulls and pulls the plastics in there, and the debris into the bottom and then pumps the water out, out of the bottom.It’s collecting all sorts from sort of tiny bits, plastic needles and bits of polystyrene, all the way up to bits of broken bucking plastic bottle as well.”

The seabin was created by a pair of Australian surfers.And it is capable of collecting plastic bits as small as two millimeters in diameter, and as many 20000 plastic bottles per year. And this one is now working on a pontoon owned by Britain’s America’s Cup sailing team.

“So as a team, as a sailing team we really see firsthand the impact of ocean plastic and marine debris on the environment.”And this plucky little ocean cleaner is hauling a lot of junk out of the sea.

“Plastics, white. We’ve probably pulled out 150 kilos of plastics and things already,and, but it’s also got the ability to filter out that sort of top layer if there’s any pollutants in the water any oils and detergents and things like that.It’s can actually filter out those as well which is really really useful.” But it is literally a drop of plastic in the bucket, because it is estimated that about 8 million metric tons of plastic flow into the sea every year.
