VOA常速英语:Rock & Roll Bulgarian Skier is One-Man Team Hoping to Compete in Pyeongchang Olympics

For Bulgarian skier and rock musician Nikola Chongarov sometimes skiing is an uphill climb.It takes a lot of work and passion to achieve this goal, the Olympics.At the last Olympics I spent 20 incredible days in Sochi where I met all these athletes and immersed in an incredible atmosphere.

Chongarov who goes by Chongi competes in what’s called ski cross.It’s downhill racing against opponents instead of a clock to qualify for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.He’ll need the place among the top 32 skiers in the world and he’ll have to do it without the financial backing of the fiscally strapped Bulgarian Ski Federation.

I would like to go to one more Olympic Games, I know I can achieve this and I want to compete in ski cross.I do not care what some people would say, from the start of this idea, I was an ultra outsider and people looked at me in a strange way.So he’s saving his money, crowdsourcing and even coaching himself.

The athlete musician says he started skiing at age 3 and he rode the slopes a year earlier in a backpack his dad wore.It’s not yet clear of Changarov will qualify for the Pyeongchang Olympics.He’s even said that he’ll write a song for someone who helps fund his quest and while the Bulgarian hopeful awaits word on whether or not he’ll compete on sports biggest stage, he’ll still be rocking and rolling on this one.
