Repair Cafes Help Keep Trash Out of Landfills, Build Community
Learning how to play guitar.
Use the first thread, right? Right.
But this isn’t a music lesson or a Jam Session, at least not officially.
I don’t know what the problem is, I guess, it’s part of my learning journey.A learning journey because her guitar was a gift and one in need of repairs, so Minu Ramanan stopped by this repair cafe in Fairfax Virginia for some help.
I think we’re just trying to... kind of change how people think about stuff. What our expectations are rather than being a consumers...we...you know, we’re more...we work better with what we have.
And guitars aren’t the only things being fixed here. People bring their broken lamps, watches, blankets and many other items to volunteers who put their handy person’s skills to work, all free of charge. It is people learning how to repair things for themselves. We’re here to teach and help people learn how to repair things and keep things being used rather than in the landfill or thrown away on the side of road.
While at the same time building a sense of community. Knitting is not really not that complicated. I can fix something fairly easily, but there are enough people who don’t know how to knit that they are amazed—it’s like magic to them. And I’m able to give them back their mother’s sweater that had a hole or something and they’re just thrilled.
The first repair cafe opened in Amsterdam in 2009. Now the website advertises more than 1600 repair cafes globally mending material objects while creating new friendships.
