In a country of more than 20 million people, tens of thousands of Brazilians are murdered each year, 5000 in Rio de Janeiro last year.The prevalence of violence especially in big cities like Rio is an ever-present concern.New apps like OTT allow civilians to alert fellow city dwellers when they see or hear trouble.The app scrolls through reports of danger and also plots trouble spots on a map.

The Fogo Cruzado app is a bit different and then it collects all maps crime data from all over the city of Rio.Its name translates to crossfire and its goal is to inform people about the most dangerous parts of the city.
