The first public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump are underway in Washington. Mr. Trump is accused of trying to press Ukraine into investigating his political rival Joe Biden. The acting US ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor said he had been informed that Mr. Trump cared more about investigation into Mr.Biden than about Ukraine. But Republican Congress members expressed their doubts about Mr. Taylor's testimony. Representative Chris Stewart said the entire impeachment proceedings came down to one overheard phone call between president Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart.

In other news, more Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza as a flare-up of tension between the two sides went on through a second day. At least twenty-three people are reported to have died in the Palestinian territory, including three children.

German media say nine suspected Islamic States supporters will be allowed to go free when they are sent back to Germany from Turkey this week. Security sources said there was insufficient evidence to issue arrest warrants.

A Swedish court has ordered the detention of an Iranian citizen on suspicion that he was complicit in the mass murder of thousands of political prisoners in Iran in the 1980s.The man was arrested soon after he arrived in Sweden to visit relatives.

President Trump has told Turkey's visiting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that they understand each other's countries despite tensions over the war in Syria and Russian missiles.They have been discussing Mr. Erdogan's decision to buy missile batteries from Russia which prompted US to block its sale of a fighter jet.

And a painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the few women accepted in the artistic circles of the 17th century Florence has sold in Paris for more than five million dollars. The work, LUCRETIA, shows the eponymous heroine taking her own life after being raped by an Etruscan prince.
