A six-year-old boy has shot and wounded a teacher in a school in the US state of Virginia.

Police say the teacher, a woman in her thirties suffered serious injuries in an altercation at Richneck Elementary School in the city of Newport News.

It's not clear why the boy had a gun in his first grade classroom or whether he knew how to control it.
