Thousands of people in El Salvador have staged a protest against President Nayib Bukele, accusing him of undermining democracy and favoring the rich and powerful.

Demonstrators came from many parts of the country to join the demonstration in the capital San Salvador.

Earlier this year, Mr Bukele sacked the Attorney General and five Supreme Court judges.

Last month, the new judges he appointed removed a constitutional ban on reelections, paving the way for Mr Bukele to seek a second term in office. The US expressed grave concern.

The protests also focused on the recent introduction of Bitcoin as legal tender.

Pedro Sanchez said his socialist government would draw up legislation which sought to ban prostitution and punish all those who profited from it.
