BBC News. Hello, this is Jerry Smit.

New lockdown measures have come into force in Moscow as the Russian capital struggles to contain a surge in Covid cases.

Only essential shops like supermarkets and pharmacies are allowed to open.

Richard Galpin is in Moscow.

It seems like a very serious situation in Moscow and across the country.

The cases are going up and up, as are the number of deaths.

The latest figures I have is actually from yesterday. It's that there were more than 1,100 deaths yesterday, just in one day.

The low vaccine take-up is absolutely crucial to this.

But I think people are just generally rather wary of new vaccines in particular.

And of course, there is something of, sort of, anti-vaccination movements in the country and that has got quite a lot of traction.

France has detained a British fishing boat caught in French waters without a license as a row over post-Brexit fishing rights escalates.

France's Fisheries Minister Annick Girardin said two British boats were stopped by maritime police.

One was fined for resisting checks.

The other was found to be fishing in French waters without a license and escorted to Le Havre.

While the checks were routine, she said, they were carried out in the context of a growing row over British fishing licenses for French boats.

France has said that from Tuesday, it will impose systematic customs and sanitary checks on British goods entering channel ports and ban British boats from unloading seafood products.

Britain has said it will retaliate to the measures France has outlined, calling the threat disappointing and disproportionate.

A new study has found that some of the world's most highly protected forests are releasing more carbon than they absorb as a result of human activities and global warming.

The shift is blamed on illegal logging, agriculture, and increasingly frequent wildfires over the past 20 years.

David Gibbs is one of the co-authors of the report.

When we cut down forests or they are burned, they will emit carbon into the atmosphere.

And it's a matter of how much forests we cut down relative to how much forest we leave standing.

If we cut down too much forest than we have forested, they emit more carbon than they're capturing from the atmosphere.

At least ten forests designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites were found to have become net carbon emitters.

The finding has alarmed experts as forests are considered vital for removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

A UN body that helps developing countries benefit from trade says rich nations need to hugely increase their spending on helping poorer ones to adapt to climate change.
